Traditional modes of studying often fail to engage many students in a way they can enjoy, causing them to view the necessary practice of studying as tedious and boring. It was during his time as an undergraduate student that Sal, the creator of Termling, was able to recognize this failure and figure out a way to solve this problem. He decided that a good way to keep students involved and invested in their studies is to incorporate this seemingly dull practice into an activity they already enjoy: RPG gaming. Sal's passion for gaming and dedication to learning inspired him to create an education platform where students, like him, can combine their interest in science with their love of gaming.
By incorporating many RPG game mechanics, such as character customization and the ability to view other players’ characters, Termling becomes a great way for gamers to study while still gaming. The goal is to make learning more accessible to those students who generally have a hard time studying but enjoy playing video games. In addition, users are also granted the ability of leaving feedback on study material, an option that is not available on other study or education platforms. Termling is adaptive in that you can organize content based on level of difficulty, and it recognizes how the user is performing. Termling creates personalized assessments of performance and shows suggestions made by the Termling community. By integrating learning with gaming and social, studying with Termling becomes a truly unique and rewarding experience.
Founder of De Knovo Technology, LLC and creator of Termling, Salvador "Sal" Deniz, Jr. understands and values the importance of education, but he also is aware of the struggles many young students face when it comes to studying, especially subjects in science. Sal is an alumni of the University of California, Irvine and of Long Beach City College with a BS in Developmental and Cell Biology and an AS/AA in Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Computer Programming, and Marketing respectively. Needless to say, Sal is no stranger to the hard hours of studying that are necessary for, as well as the importance and value of, a good education.
When he wasn't wrapped up in his many academic pursuits, Sal got busy pursuing his other “extracurricular” activities. Sal is very keen on RPG gaming; a few of his favorites from a long list of games include World of Warcraft, Ultima Online, and Final Fantasy 7. His passion for gaming and his dedication to learning inspired him to create an education platform where students like him can combine their interest in science with their love of RPG gaming. His goal is to make learning more accessible to those students who generally have a hard time studying but enjoy playing video games. By integrating learning and gaming, studying will no longer be a tedious task. Instead it will be a richer and more enjoyable experience.
"Science is a fascinating subject, but it doesn't always come off that way to students in the classroom. I hope to get young people interested in science and learning by combining studying with gaming."
